#6 Amazon to open 10-acre shipping warehouse on Tsawwassen First Nation land
Amazon has announced plans to open a shipping warehouse in a new industrial park on Tsawwassen First Nation land in Delta, B.C. The facility will be 450,000-square feet and will create more than 700 full time jobs. The warehouse is expected to open by Christmas holiday next year. In my opinion, I believe opening the warehouse in Tsawwassen is a great idea. Even though the facility is on Aboriginal land, the First Nations still own it and it is not being taken away from them. The warehouse will bring over 700 jobs, meaning less unemployment in the area, especially for the First Nations. Placing a major shipping facility in the area will also mean faster shipping of certain products to local areas.
#8 Canadian police forces taking different tacks to officers who want to toke
When recreational marijuana becomes legal next week, Vancouver cops will be fit for duty if they have smoked weed the day before, Toronto and RCMP officers will have to wait 28 days before they are fit for duty, and Calgary officers will never be allowed to toke. Vancouver police are allowing their staff to smoke while off-duty and cannot be impaired while on-duty. RCMP and Toronto’s police force have set their limit to 28 days because of some studies claiming marijuana impairs you for longer than 72 hours. Calgary officers will never be allowed to smoke due to not enough evidence on the effects of the plant. In my opinion, police officers should be allowed to smoke on their own time and not be controlled while off-duty. However there should be a zero tolerance policy for being impaired at work for marijuana, alcohol and other substances. A good measurement of time could be no smoking marijuana within 8 hours of being on-duty.
What I learned:
From these two articles I learned about a few regulations imposed by the legalization of cannabis and about how jobs are being created for first nations people. In terms of the legalization of cannabis I discovered that some police departments allow their employee’s to use marijuana, however, some do not because of a lack of evidence of the effects. According to the Cannabis Act, adults who are 18 years of age or older are legally able to use, possess, buy, and grow marijuana. In terms of new jobs, I found that Amazon is creating a massive shipping warehouse on aboriginal land that will create over 700 full time jobs. This is very important to solving the unemployment issue with first nations people.
