#5 Abbotsford vice principal charged with child pornography offences
Michael Haire, vice principal of W.A. Fraser Middle School, has been charged with making available child pornography and possession of child pornography. An examination by the Abbotsford Police Department’s Digital Forensic Lab is currently underway and at this point, has revealed thousands of images and videos depicting child pornography and child abuse. This was Michael’s third year at W.A. Fraser and twelfth year working for the Abbotsford School District. Haire has no criminal record. In my opinion, I believe Michael Haire should definitely receive strong punishment for the crimes he committed. Since Haire was in a line of work which dealt with children, he should be banned from anything related to children for life and should be classified as a child predator.
#20 Vancouver School Board says girl lured from playground despite adequate supervision and safety measures
6-year-old girl taken and sexually assaulted last Wednesday from South Vancouver elementary school playground. The Vancouver School Board is trying to reassure parents about the safety and supervision of their children after a six-year-old girl was lured away from the playground of her elementary school. Police say the girl was taken from Sexsmith Elementary, sexually assaulted and returned to the schoolyard on Wednesday during school hours. They are still investigating the incident. all the safety protocols were followed at the school the day the incident took place. There is no specific policy around supervision or required ratio of supervisors to children but, there was an adequate number of staff in the playground on December 5th. In my opinion, I believe a law should be passed in which security cameras can be used in certain parts of the school, including live footage. With this simple measure taken, school staff could monitor students in the schoolyard and inside the school. Many problems could be solved with this simple adjustment such as monitoring intruders, use of drugs or alcohol, and bullying etc.
What I learned:
From the two articles I read, I discovered that child related sexual offences are taken very seriously in Canada, however they are not well prevented. For the first news article, I read about the Abbotsford vice principal, Michael Haire, who was charged with child pornography offences. Haire was able to confiscate phones and transfer photos on to his computer, however, this could have been prevented by having a set rule where your phone must be given back at the end of the day. For the second article, I read about the 6-year-old girl that was taken and sexually assaulted from a South Vancouver elementary school playground. This could have easily been prevented if there was more supervision or even cameras in the schoolyard. All in all child related sexual offences are taken very seriously in Canada, however many cases could have been prevented.
